Homewards Fund Grant

Newport Council

The Newport Homewards Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group (EDIWG) in partnership with Newport Council and Homewards Newport members, have been awarded a grant from the Homewards Fund.

The grant will fund Vasco translation devices, which will be distributed among local council outreach teams and three key partner charities involved in Homewards Newport (The Gap, Communities House, and NYCA). These devices will facilitate real-time translation, bridging communication gaps between individuals with limited English who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness and support services.

The primary objectives are to improve communication, reduce the likelihood of homelessness by overcoming language barriers, and enhance access to support services by enabling a better understanding of individual needs. By investing in these translation devices, the initiative aims to empower individuals experiencing homelessness and contribute to a more inclusive and supportive community in Newport.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will allow us to trial innovative translation technology in our local community. With such a diverse range of languages spoken here, this initiative is a vital step towards breaking down communication barriers. By fostering understanding and building stronger relationships, we aim to provide faster, more effective support to those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This technology will enable us to connect with individuals in a way that truly respects their unique voices and needs, empowering us to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.”
