Homewards Newport and Women of Newport present a photography exhibition aiming to change the narrative around female homelessness

On Wednesday 22nd January, Homewards Newport in partnership with Women of Newport presented a photography exhibition at The Hive, a Homewards Newport Coalition member. The exhibition, photographed by Kamila Jarczak, features portraits of women who have experienced homelessness in Newport and aims to change narratives around female homelessness, demonstrating that with the right support in place, recovery is possible. The positive imagery inspires hope and optimism that homelessness can be ended.
The event also saw the launch of the Women’s Action Group established by the women featured in the exhibition and Kamila Jarczak, supported by Homewards Newport and the Women of Newport. The group is an opportunity for women with lived experience to have their voices heard in the design of homelessness services locally moving forward.
The exhibition and working group launch highlight the importance of working directly with people who have experienced homelessness as a way of demonstrating that change is possible, but also, that people with lived experience are invaluable partners in service design, ensuring that services are inclusive, effective, and truly reflective of the communities they aim to serve.
Jolene Martin, Women of Newport Board Member
“At Women of Newport, we strongly believe that every woman has the potential to make a real difference in their community and the lives of those around them. But in order for this to happen, women need the embrace of fellow women—a community that encourages, supports, and reminds them of their strength. The Women of Newport photography exhibition and event is a testament to what happens when women with shared lived experiences come together. Their courage and resilience are nothing short of inspiring.”
Tracey Jones, Women of Newport Board Member
“The Women of Newport and Homewards exhibition is a powerful testament to the resilience and strength of women who have faced homelessness. By sharing their stories, these women not only highlight the urgent need for change but also inspire our community to come together and support each other. This exhibition is a rallying cry for compassion, collaboration, and lasting change.”
Women of Newport is on view from February until 25th March and is free to attend.
