HomeLife Newport achieves 100% tenancy sustainment and secures funding for a further year
HomeLife Newport, a partnership between Codi, Housing Justice and Barnardo’s and made possible following seed funding via The Homewards Fund, has secured funding for a further year following early successes. The project has so far helped 62 people across Newport and achieved a 100% tenancy sustainment rate, supporting individuals and families to sustain safe, secure homes and helping to prevent homelessness in the city.
Since its setup last year, HomeLife has focused on early intervention and practical, community-based support for those at risk of homelessness. The project helps people to move on successfully from temporary accommodation, as well as preventing others from reaching a crisis point altogether.
HomeLife is delivered through a partnership between Codi, Housing Justice and Barnardo’s, working together from The Hive in Newport. A core part of the model is the training and support of volunteers who work alongside individuals and families to provide tailored, one-to-one assistance with housing stability and tenancy sustainment.
Across its caseload, the project has supported people in a range of housing situations – from those already in permanent homes, to people moving on from temporary accommodation, and those at risk of street homelessness.
Due to its positive impact and strong outcomes, HomeLife Newport has now secured further funding for an additional year from May 1st, enabling the partnership to continue supporting people at risk of homelessness and build on what has already been achieved.
Why this matters
Sustaining a tenancy is one of the most effective ways to prevent homelessness from recurring. When people are supported to stay in their homes, pressure on temporary accommodation is reduced, disruption to families and individuals is minimised, and the risk of people experiencing homelessness is significantly lower.
HomeLife Newport demonstrates how early support, delivered locally, through trusted relationships and from a community-based setting, can help stop housing issues escalating into crisis. By focusing on tenancy sustainment and prevention, the project is contributing to longer-term systems change in Newport, supporting stability for individuals while helping the local area move away from reactive responses to homelessness.
HomeLife forms part of the wider Homewards Newport Coalition, which brings together local organisations committed to demonstrating that it is possible to make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated.
